SOUTH Africa's Roland Schoeman became the first man to swim 50 metres freestyle under 21 seconds overnight.

Schoeman clocked 20.98sec in the heats at a short-course invitational meet here.

Swimming in a specially built, 25-metre pool at a tennis stadium here, he lowered the previous world mark by 0.12sec, held for the past two years by Frederic Bousquet from France.

The South African also holds the 100 metres shortcourse world record and the 50 metres butterfly long-course best.

He won a gold medal with South Africa in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
