The Brand - What Chang Stand's For

Chang means elephant which is widely acknowledged for its superior strength and mental capacity, and held in respect by Thais. Elephants have played a significant role in Thailand's history, primarily as a conveyance for warriors in battle against invaders of the kingdom as well as for royal and religious ceremonies.

In particular, a white elephant was considered in ancient times as a venerable creature worthy of use only by kings, queens and those of noble birth. A pair of white elephants facing one another, as symbolized by the Chang brand, represents solidity for building harmony, happiness and prosperity of citizens in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Brand Personality

In humanizing Chang two key characteristics come to mind : Thai-ness and Dependability.

Hearty, sociable and spirited in a down-to-earth, typically Thai way, Chang is dependable in more ways than one. Be it quality raw ingredients or advanced production technology, Chang can be counted on to satisfy drinkers who appreciate a full-bodied, smooth-tasting beer.

Brand Background

Chang beer was launched in Thailand in 1995 by Beer Thai (1991) Co., Ltd. which is a part of Thai Bev Group.

Brewed at the large-capacity plants in Ayutthaya and Kampangphet Province with a total combined capacity of 12,000,000.HL, Chang has been very popular with the mass market of beer drinkers, particularly the off-trade market.

Within a year of its launch, Chang gained a 10% share of the beer market. Its popularity grew rapidly throughout Thailand. Today Chang has established itself as the brand leader commanding currently more than a 68% share of the total beer market.

Chang is brewed as Original with 6.4% alcohol content, and International with a strength of 5.0%. Chang pours with a bubbly head, and has a mild-malt taste with a well-balanced hop character and bittersweet note in the finish, making up for the fullness of body.

Chang is packaged in 660ml and 330ml glass bottles and 330ml cans.

Hmmm, not really sure whether it`s available in the UK, Phil. I would imagine though that if they sponsor an English football club they would be selling their products here.

I`m not a beer drinker normally so I`m not an expert by any means - I`m more of a wine drinker.

Here`s what I got from a website however about Chang beer:-

Purchased in Thailand, the lack of information in English on the label of this beer means that we are unsure of the brewery name. 'Chang' means 'Elephant', hence the pictures on the label, but this beer shouldn't be confused with the much stronger and darker Carlsberg Elephant Beer (we'd guess the strength of Chang at about 5%). It pours with a bubbly head that shrinks rapidly. Nose is of grassy hops, with a touch of light malt, along with a light lemony note. It has a vegetal, tinny hop character in the mouth, and it is quite bitter but nevertheless fairly thin. A light caramel note is present in the finish, which leaves a cloying aftertaste. It's actually not too bad - well-hopped and refreshing, with enough balance in the finish to make up for the lightness of the body.
