US-ASEAN Business Council honours HM the King

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - The US-ASEAN Business Council issued a resolution to honour His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday.

The announcement stated that the ministry had received a report from the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington that the US-ASEAN Business Council, an organisation which groups together various US companies concerned with promoting business ties with member countriues of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), issued a resolution on May 10 to congratulate the people of Thailand and His Majesty the King on his 60 years on the throne.

The council executive committee resolution noted that His Majesty the King has worked tirelessly over the past six decades and has been a strong supporter of partnership with business to promote economic development in all areas of the kingdom.

The revered and beloved monarch has also worked consistently to improve the education, health and welfare of the workers and people of Thailand.

The council also stated that His Majesty the King has promoted and nurtured ties to governments throughout the world, including the United States; and thus, he is beloved by the people of Thailand and respected throughout the world.

His Majesty King Bhumibol is currently the world's longest serving monarch and will celebrate the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne on June 9.

UN will confer lifetime achievement award on Thailand's King

BANGKOK, May 20 (TNA) – United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will confer the first United Nations Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award on His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand next Friday (May 26).

Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kitti Wasinondh and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) representative Joana Merlin Scholtes jointly told a press conference here Friday that Mr. Annan and his wife would pay a three-day official visit to Thailand as the guests of the Thai government, starting next Thursday (May 25).

The award has just been created and will be given to His Majesty the King, who this year is celebrating the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne in 1946.

Mr. Kitti said the UN secretary-general is scheduled to give a speech highlighting His Majesty the King's achievements and his lifetime of dedication to development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs next Friday morning.

Mr. Annan and his wife will have an audience with His Majesty the King at Klaikangvol Palace in Hua Hin, a seaside district of the upper southern province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, in the evening of the same day.
