Unexpected Service - TIT

I'm living in one of those areas the phone companies don't bother to extend their lines to. So I gotta use GPRS. Did so for a while already. Since a few months it is getting less and less good. Until it could hardly be used anymore. So I complained via email to callcenter@ais.co.th .

I was answered by email, asked for my location and phone number they could contact me at. They called me and asked whether I would let them check. Of course I let them check. So last week a team of three came here and measured signal strength at every corner of the house and around. Then they tried to adjust their 5 kms distant transmitters vial notebook to get a stronger signal for my house. In Vain! They agreed with me that this was unsuitable for using GPRS. Promised to contact me soon again.

Instead they showed up with a team of six at my house this morning. Told me that the company planned as long-term solution to put up a new transmitter in my village. But until then they offered to lend me a signal transmitter and antenna free of charge. They installed the antenna and then experimented with me on my computer where the best spot for the small blue transmitter were. We found out that close to a wall was bad, the wall absorbed the signal. But on my desk is just fine. Now I had full signal strength up a couple of hundred percent. But the GPRS was still problematic to use. The engineer now called at his company to change something in the encoding for my number. Now I get between 46 and 60 mbps down and 12 - 15 kbps up like never before. Next week they want to come again to exchange that white stick from the blue box with a suitable antenna since at the moment it is only provisional. But already about 50 m around my house and all over inside I have the full signal.

I'm baffled - Is this Thailand? In my homecountry they would have tried to sell that antenna and signal booster to me, or they had just told me to buy a better modem or move somewhere where the signal is better.

Thats great news Klaus and excellent customer service from AIS, however a work crew of 6 seems a little "excessive" to install just a box and antenna Icon_eek

KC can you explain a little of this to me......the GPRS..... I am in Chiang Mai and currently with TOT ADSL.... 512/256.......Would this be an improvement to me.... TOT has gotten progressively slower and slower and sometimes hard to "access server"

If, what is required to get a system like you have.... how much would you estimate cost....and would it be similar to a wireless LAN for my property...

I had the impression that it was not a standard procedure. The three who came last week already were technicians, the other three who came along now didn't look like technicians to me they were more a kind of planning team. The engineer spoke excellent english, let me check and play with everything, watching and listening carefully, asking for my opinion, not with standard questions like people who want to hear about how good their company is but rather trying to find out how to make the service better.

To me that sounds like a good idea: to find out what the customer needs from him directly instead of paying so called research institutes.Icon_smile
