UEFA await report on racist claims after England win

UEFA are waiting for the match delegate's report after accusations of racism by Germany players overshadowed England Under-21s' 2-0 win.

Micah Richards and Anton Ferdinand both alleged they were called "monkeys" by opposition players at the BayArena during the second leg of their European Championships qualification play-off, which England won through late goals from substitute Theo Walcott.

The incident happened in the second half of the clash in Leverkusen, and a Football Association spokesman confirmed: "Two of our players have complained of racial abuse from Germany players.

"We have raised that with the UEFA delegate after the game and will be formally communicating with UEFA in the next couple of days.

"Racism is an issue which we take extremely seriously and we'll follow this up."

UEFA's head of communications William Gaillard said: "We are waiting for the report, we have had no complaints yet but if we do we will investigate.

"For anyone it is extremely harsh and awful to be racially insulted but obviously when you are dealing with younger people it is made all the worse.

"We take any kind of discrimination or racist behaviour very seriously and toughened up our sanctions in the summer.

"I do not remember a problem with Germany Under-21s before but recently there have been some problems in the east of Germany with Gerald Asamoah (who currently plays for Schalke)."

The accusations marred England's 3-0 aggregate victory, with Peter Taylor's youngsters now through to the finals in Holland next year.
