Toxic gardens clean-up to begin

Work to clear soil contaminated with arsenic and lead in 100 gardens in Seaton Carew will begin in the spring.

Hartlepool Council said the work to clean-up the gardens would cost £4m.

The government has promised to cover part of the cost, but some residents are concerned gardens will not be returned to their original state.

Council chiefs said the work will begin in April or May. The land was formerly used for the storage of treated pit props which may have poisoned the soil.

But the council said levels of contamination were very low and posed no risk to health.

The grant will cover the basic, remedial work such as replacing soil, but will not cover more elaborate features such as patios or ornamental brick work.

Dave Stubbs, director of neighbourhood services for Hartlepool Council, said: "We have received an indication from the government that we are to receive a grant so remedial work can take place.

"It is true that we cannot replace like for like and it will either be fences or turf on offer to residents.

"However, we are committed to trying to put back gardens as best we can."
