Tony Curtis, the Oscar-nominated actor, has died at the age of 85.

His daughter Jamie Lee Curtis confirmed that he died on Wednesday at his home in Henderson, Nevada.

The Some Like It Hot star made more than 140 films over 60 years.

However, he was almost as well known for his colourful private life after marrying six times and battling an addiction to alcohol.

In his later years he began a second career as a successful artist.

The Hollywood star had been in failing health for some years and in July this year he was hospitalised after being taken ill in Las Vegas with an asthma attack.

When asked in an interview in 2008 what he would like on his gravestone he replied, "Nobody's perfect", quoting a line from the comedy Some Like It Hot.

The 1959 film is the one for which he is most remembered and co-starred Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon.

Curtis was born Bernard Schwartz in the Bronx in New York in 1925.

Although he never won an Academy Award he was nominated for his dramatic role in The Defiant Ones with Sidney Poitier in 1958.

He also appeared alongside Kirk Douglas in Spartacus in 1960.

Curtis had four children and his current wife was Jill Vandenberg Curtis whom he married in 1998 and who is more than 40 years his junior.

He once remarked: "I wouldn't be caught dead marrying a woman old enough to be my wife."
