Seven children pulled from burning building

SEVEN children were pulled from the second-storey window of a burning building in Melbourne early today.

A woman managed to get out down a staircase after the fire broke out in a ground floor shop about 7am (AEDT) in Sunshine, west Melbourne.

The children were rescued when choking smoke drifted into the second-storey home in the building.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) spokesman said all eight were treated for smoke inhalation.

Sunshine's lead firefighter Luke Kearney said the youngest child was five and the eldest a teenager.

All were taken to Sunshine's Western Hospital and were reported to be in a stable condition.

"No one appears to have any burns," he said.

"It was a minor fire, but a lot of smoke was generated.

"Downstairs was all boarded up and the doors were locked and the smoke drifted."

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
