England win Soccer Aid 2-1
10.41PM, Sat May 27 2006

England have beaten the Rest of the World team 2-1 in the Soccer Aid charity match at Old Trafford.

Stars of the football and entertainment world lined up for the eagerly anticipated clash between an England side captained by Robbie against a Rest of the World side led by chef Gordon Ramsay.

A sell-out crowd of 75,000 fans was at Old Trafford to watch the match, with millions expected to tune in to watch the game live on ITV1.

The match was held in aid of children's charity Unicef.

Ferdinand opened the scoring at Old Trafford with a typical diving header from Gascoigne's pinpoint cross in the 14th minute.

Actor and co-organiser Jonathan Wilkes' superb solo effort put England 2-0 up after 20 minutes before Diego Maradona converted a second-half penalty - awarded for a handball by singer David Gray - for the Rest of the World side. Jonathan Wilkes was named man of the match.

The England team, captained by Williams and managed by former England coach Terry Venables, had former England internationals Paul Gascoigne, John Barnes, Tony Adams, David Seaman, and Bryan Robson alongside TV stars Jamie Theakston and Angus Deayton.

Ramsay's team included former Argentina international Diego Maradona, former Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola and Tony Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell.

The Rest of the World team was managed by former Dutch international and ex-Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit.
