Pakistan Secure Another One-Day Victory Against England

Younis, Yousuf Lead Pakistan to One-Day Victory Against England

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf shared a 167-run partnership to lead Pakistan to a two-wicket win against England in the third one-day cricket international, and secure a 2-0 series lead.

Younis scored 101, his second century in 137 one-day matches, as Pakistan reached 273-8 with one over remaining in reply to England's 271-9 from 50 overs at the Rose Bowl, Southampton.

England, which has now lost 17 of its past 22 limited overs internationals, can at best draw the five-game series. The opening match was a no-result after it was abandoned because of rain, then Pakistan won the next game by seven wickets.

Pakistan lost the early wickets of Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez in its reply, bringing together Younis and Yousuf at 29-2. Younis struck his ton in 109 balls, while Yousuf added 60 from 103 balls.

Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq cracked an unbeaten 44 from 33 deliveries to guide the visitor to victory, though pace bowler Stuart Broad gave England hope of a win with three wickets. Broad finished with 3-57, with Jon Lewis taking 2-32.

Earlier, three England batsmen scored half-centuries as it posted its best total of the series, recovering after opener Marcus Trescothick was bowled first ball by Shoaib Akhtar.

All-rounder Jamie Dalrymple, who later claimed the wicket of Yousuf, top-scored with 62. He helped add 101 for the fifth wicket with Paul Collingwood, who got 61 from 62 balls, while Andrew Strauss struck 50. Naved-ul-Hasan was Pakistan's most successful bowler, taking 4-57.

England, eighth of 10 teams in the one-day rankings, next faces third-ranked Pakistan at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on Sept. 8. The final game is set for Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sept. 10.
