Mangosteen

One of the newest, hottest topics in health food supplements today is Mangosteen!
A whole fruit puree of exotic Mangosteen fruit and its primary nutrient compound, xanthones -- naturally occurring, high-potency antioxidants found primarily in the peel/hull of the fruit; especially the most studied of them: XANTHONES / Alpha mangostin and Gamma mangostin. Revered for centuries as Asia's "Queen of Fruits", the mangosteen is prized for its exquisite taste and healthful benefits.

Long hidden in the Orient, the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L) is now available -- in a uniquely delicious and amazingly healthful juice nutritional supplement comprised of a whole fruit puree of exotic mangosteen along with other all-natural, high-antioxidant ingredients.

The place of origin of the mangosteen is unknown but is believed to be the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas; still, there are wild trees in the forests of Kemaman, Malaya. Corner suggests that the tree may have been first domesticated in Thailand, or Burma. It is much cultivated in Thailand–where there were 9,700 acres (4,000 ha) in 1965–also in Kampuchea, southern Vietnam and Burma, throughout Malaya and Singapore.

The mangosteen fruit consists of the following parts:

Pericarp (rind or peel): the half-centimeter pericarp is green unripe and dark purple when ripe. It contains
the highest concentrations of xanthones in the entire fruit
Pulp (fruit) – the fleshy interior that is responsible for its reputation as the best tasting fruit in the world
Seeds – usually one to two in number within the pulp
The mangosteen fruit has been used for centuries as a folk-lore medicine. Research laboratories around the world have
now been helping us understand how the mangosteen fruit works. Modern science is just catching up with what centuries
of herbal doctors have already known.

Xanthones are phytochemicals that are the power inside the mangosteen juice.

Xanthones are biologically active plant phenols that naturally occur in a restricted group of plants. Xanthones possess significant pharmacological properties, including Anti-depressant, anti-leukaemic, anti-tumor, anti-ulcer anti-hepatotoxic,
anti-allergenic, and anti-rhinoviral activities and actions.

Xanthones have been found to help fight against liver poisoning, viral and
bacterial infections and fungus! Xanthones are also powerful antioxidants
that stop free radicals and oxidation from destroying healthy cells!
Xanthones are plant phenols, found in a limited number of plants and the
mangosteen fruit has the largest number of xanthones--40 have been found so far!

RE: Mangosteen

Mangosteen is a dark purple fruit about 2 to 3 inches in diameter – the size of a small peach or apple. Mangosteens are unrelated to mangos.

Instead of peeling it like an orange, a mangosteen is typically opened by pressing firmly or twisting the outside until it breaks apart.

The hard rind can be nearly one inch thick. At the center is the soft opaque white fruit, which resembles a head of garlic but tastes slightly sweet and tart.

In North America, fresh mangosteens can be found in Canada and Hawaii but they cannot legally be imported into continental United States due to concerns that they transport insects into the country.
