A PERTH man has avoided jail for posting cartoons depicting men having sex with young children on a Thai internet site.

Suriya Boriboon, 31, received an 18 month sentence, suspended for two years, in the Western Australian District Court today for using a carriage (the internet) to make child pornography available in January last year.

He was also given a concurrent 18 month suspended sentence for the possession of child pornography photos on his computer, found after Australian Federal Police searched his house.

Boriboon had pleaded guilty to the charges in June last year.

He admitted to uploading Japanese-style cartoons, called Manga, onto a Thai website.

The cartoons depicted men having penetrative sex with very young children.

"He foolishly put this on (the website) as a bit of humour," Boriboon's lawyer Mark Andrews told the court.

On his home computer, police found a picture slideshow of real-life young girls becoming progressively more undressed until they were semi-naked and covered in fruit and flowers.

The girls were not shown having sex.

Chief Judge Antoinette Kennedy said the images were "heinous" but not "material at the top of its scale".

The cartoons were "not as serious as depictions of real children. No child is being abused," Chief Judge Kennedy said.

Boriboon had very good prospects for rehabilitation and was a low risk of reoffending in a similar manner, she said.
