Fog wreaks havoc on flights

HEAVY fog has created chaos for thousands of Sydneysiders for the second time this week, with suspended ferry services, traffic jams and massive disruptions to international flights.

Passengers on more than 40 international flights scheduled to arrive in Sydney this morning were forced to disembark in Melbourne and Brisbane because of heavy fog clouding the city this morning.

A further 17 domestic arrivals were either delayed or diverted, bringing the total number of arriving flights affected to 60.

Public affairs manager at Sydney Airport Michael Samaras said the thickness of the fog was being monitored “very closely”.

“It’s fairly substantial fog and it’s causing a lot of disruptions,” Mr Samaras said.

The fog caused widespread problems across Sydney as major roads and public transport services ground to a halt before the fog began to lift at 9am (AEST).

Heavy traffic was clogging the M4 motorway, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and other roads and the RTA said every motorist should take care this morning.

“Fog has reduced visibility at various locations across the metropolitan area,” the RTA said on its website.

“Motorists are advised to reduce speed and drive according to conditions.”

Numerous accidents have already been recorded by the RTA.

Sydney Ferries also cancelled all of its early services, with free bus services running between Manly and Circular Quay.

Sydney Ferries public affairs manager Philip Adams said all ferry services resumed before 9am (AEST).

“We do apologise to all our customers,” Mr Adams said.

On Monday, many ferry services were suspended and some flights were also disrupted.
