Feed the Birds Day - Saturday Oct.28th

About Feed The Birds Day

RSPB Feed The Birds Day is a great opportunity to step up your feeding to help garden birds through the cold months ahead. This year's event is on Saturday 28 October.

Why feed?

It's good to feed birds all year round - for warmth in the cold weather and energy during the breeding season.

Providing a little food, water and shelter can really help birds through the winter - and turn your garden into a wildlife haven for you to enjoy.

Why have Feed The Birds Day in October?

Feed The Birds Day marks the clocks going back and the winter nights drawing in - it's the time when birds and other wildlife need a little extra help as the first frost looms.
'It's good to feed birds all year round - for warmth in the cold weather and energy during the breeding season'

So please fill your feeders, clean your bird tables, put out some water and give a helping hand to the wild birds around you.

And the sooner you start feeding them, the more birds you'll see when you sit down to enjoy the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch in January! You may be surprised how the number changes according to the food you put out.
Get involved

Special events will be taking place across the UK to celebrate Feed The Birds Day on Saturday 28 October. Details will be posted on The Feed The Birds Day pages soon!

I see they are now talking about green food even for the birds.

Regardless of how much (or how little) time you have there is always something you can do to make your home wildlife-friendly. Richard Bashford, Feed the Birds Day project manager, explains what you can do and also, what we're doing to be more wildlife-friendly...

There are three essentials we all need to survive - food, water and shelter, however whereas a trip to the supermarket and popping the heating on will suffice for us humans, things aren't quite so simple in the bird world, but the RSPB's range of bird foods can help tick one of the boxes.
Good for birds - and the environment

Our brand new range of birdcare launched in February 2006. This has enabled us to take sole control over sourcing, mixes and testing, so as well as ensuring the seed and mixes in your gardens is good for the birds we're also making sure that it's good for the environment.

All the cereals used in our mixes are currently grown in Europe, but we hope that in the coming year we will be able to increase the content of UK produced cereals in our bird food. We currently have 12 UK farmers who are growing black sunflower hearts for us.
'We're delighted that now we're able to put 100 per cent of profit from RSPB birdcare sales directly into our conservation work.'

Understandably, in the current climate it is not possible for us to grow all the cereals in the UK but, wherever possible, the product imported from Europe is transported in an environmentally friendly way, usually by barge.

Looking to the future, our plan is to work with several UK farmers to develop products, which have the same nutritional benefits and palatability as those currently available from the continent. In the meantime, however, we're delighted that now we're able to put 100 per cent of profit from RSPB birdcare sales directly into our conservation work.

Buying from the RSPB gives birds a double boost: they get fed the right foods and the profits go to bird conservation. You can't get better than that.
