Emergency decree in deep South to be extended

Emergency decree in deep South to be extended for another three months

BANGKOK, July 6 (TNA) - The government will extend its implementation of the emergency decree in Thailand's deep South for another three months.

The decision was made at Thursday's meeting of a government committee in charge of administrating emergency situations.

The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Gen.Thammarak Isarangura Na Ayutthaya on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Pol. Gen. Chidchai Vanasatidya, resolved that the emergency decree is still needed to help tackle insurgency in the country's three troubled southernmost province of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, and that the implementation of the executive decree is to be extended for another three months after it expires on July 19, Pol. Gen. Chumpol Manmai, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) told journalists after the meeting.

The committee's assessment of the special law also found that it had caused no erroneous problem, but just had been alleged of violating human rights, he revealed.

The cabinet is likely to endorse the committee's resolution on the extension of the executive decree at its meeting on July 18, according to the NIA chief.

The government first imposed the emergency decree in the southern border region in July last year and it has been extended for a three-month period each since then.
