Dead and Injured in Rome Rail Crash

ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Two subway trains collided at the end of morning rush hour in central Rome on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring at least 60 others, authorities said.

Earlier, officials had said two people had been killed in the crash at Piazza Vittorio station in the center of Italy's capital. The difference was apparently due to confusion at the scene.

Police said the conductor of one of the trains was found alive, and the rescue operation was complete.

According to emergency coordination officials, a 30-year-old woman died from her injuries at a local hospital. Among the injured, five were seriously wounded.

The accident took place at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) when one train pulling into the station crashed at high speed into another one that was discharging passengers.

A witness said the roof of the station then collapsed. "About one quarter of the first carriage of the train I was on was totally crushed," a man whose name was given only as Fabiano told Sky Italia TV.

Prime Minister Romano Prodi told Reuters officials were "still looking into whether it was a human mistake or if something went wrong with the signalling."

"The trains were brand new and there is no visible technical fault at the moment. Now let's give our condolences to the casualties and let's stay close to the ones who are in hospital," he said.

Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni said: "When I first heard of it, I was afraid it could be something else," an apparent reference to fears of a terror attack.

Transportation spokesman Massimo Bianchini ruled out terrorism as a cause.

Television pictures showed police and rescue workers carrying injured passengers from the station.

Witnesses said people covered with blood were leaving the station while others remained trapped below. There were also reports that a electrical panel exploded when the trains collided, Reuters reported.

Some passengers said the driver of the second train jumped a red light, according to The Associated Press.

"I saw the red light as the train moved into the station," Andrew Trovaioli, a 38-year-old passenger, said.

"I saw lots of blood, the impact was brutal," said Trovaioli, who was himself injured in the crash. He said he saw about 10 people lying on the ground, and three or four covered in rubble.

"There was panic for some 30 seconds. We were not told how to get out," he told AP.

"All the lights went out. It was frightening," another man told Sky.

The whole of Rome metro's Line A closed down and road traffic was especially busy as ambulances ferried the injured to hospitals.
