A BRITISH soldier was killed and four others were injured by an explosion in southern Afghanistan yesterday.

The blast happened as a “Snatch” Land Rover escorted a military team to survey the site for a new road project near Lashkar Gah in volatile Helmand province.

All five were airlifted to hospital where the soldier from the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters was pronounced dead.

The other four are receiving treatment.

All their next of kin have been informed.

Just after the blast — at 10am local time — a man on a bike was shot and killed when he failed to stop at a security cordon. Another biker was injured.

An MoD spokeswoman said: “Two men drove towards the cordon ignoring soldiers’ warnings.”
