Boy, 15, charged with murder of father-of-five 'beaten to death for refusing to hand

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

A boy, 15, and man, 20, were today charged with the murder of a father-of-five who was allegedly beaten to death after refusing to hand over a bottle of wine.
Michael Eccles, 43, died in hospital on Monday after being attacked just yards from his home in Lichfield, Staffordshire, on Sunday as he made his way home from shops in the Dimbles area of the city.
The bottle of wine was found smashed on the street nearby.
Both defendants will appear at Tamworth magistrates court later today.
Mr Eccles' family yesterday spoke of their grief.
They said the killers ‘can simply have no idea what they have done’, describing him as a ‘hardworking family man, who was kind, giving and loving’.
In a statement they said: ‘He was a loud and outgoing character, who was great fun. He was able to find a joke and something positive in everything.
‘Ecky lived for his family and protected them all the time.
‘Yvonne and his five children will miss him more than words can say.
‘He was the best dad and grandad anyone could have wished for, and a great brother and loving son.
‘It is an awful, awful tragedy that Ecky has been taken from us in this way. We find it really difficult to accept that he’s gone. The people responsible can simply have no idea what they have done to his family.
‘Our final words have to be about Ecky himself. He was a larger-than-life character who has left a massive hole in all of our lives and we will miss him desperately.’
Mr Eccles was attacked after walking the 150 yards from his house in the cathedral city of Lichfield, Staffordshire, to a neighbourhood off-licence on Sunday night.
After buying the wine and leaving the shop, he was allegedly hit with the brick, causing the bottle to smash on the ground.

Mr Eccles, who is a part-time football coach, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, where he suffered a brain haemorrhage yesterday and died shortly afterwards.
Last night two youths of 15 and 20 were questioned by police in connection with the death. They have since been charged.
Locals described the shopping parade as a 'no go area' at night
Mr Eccles was a manager at Rom steel manufacturers in Lichfield. His bosses closed the factory yesterday as a mark of respect.
A work colleague of Mr Eccles said: 'Mick was a lovely guy, a decent hard-working bloke who was never involved in any trouble.
'We are absolutely devastated. A friend of mine went to see him in hospital earlier today and Mick was unrecognisable such was the brutality of the attack.
'They killed him just for a bottle of wine.'
