Bidding war for first photos of Brad's baby

Bidding war for first photos of Brad's baby
01:00am 8th June 2006

For a baby whose name means 'the new messiah', it is fitting that her first publicity pictures are the most expensive ever bought.

A fierce bidding war for the first image of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's baby daughter Shiloh Nouvel eventually went to Hello! magazine in the UK for £1.8million and People in the US for £2.2million.

Other deals yet to be made are likely to earn the couple a £6million fortune which they are planning to donate to children's charities.

The picture Hello! has chosen for its front cover does not show much of Pitt or baby Shiloh - save the fact that she has her mother's lips and her daddy's nose.

But the actor's hand is seen gently cradling the pair's sleeping baby.

Shiloh Nouvel Pitt-Jolie was born two weeks ago in Namibia, where the couple were based for a month, by Caesarean section weighing 7lb.

Shiloh, pronounced Shye-loh, is a name of Hebrew origin and means 'his gift' or 'the peaceful one' and is understood to refer to the Messiah.

Nouvel refers to Miss Jolie's French roots - her mother Marcheline Bertrand is French - and means 'new' although it is not usually used as a girl's name.

Although she is Miss Jolie's first newborn, Shiloh already has a brother and sister; Maddox, four, who was adopted by the 31-year-old actress from Cambodia and Zahara, 15 months who was adopted from Ethiopia.

Pitt, 42. who left Jennifer Aniston, his wife of four years, after falling for Miss Jolie on the set of their movie Mr and Mrs Smith, recently adopted both children.

And sources say the couple, who are due to fly back to America tomorrow, are already planning to adopt another child - perhaps from Namibia.

"The thinking is that they have two babies, they're already changing diapers, so another won't be a problem," a source told American magazine In Touch.

"Angelina wants to thank the Namibians for all they have done for her family by giving a loving home to a child that needs one.

"Brad loves babies and would be more than happy to have another one."

The pair are also planning to buy a home in Namibia which they will visit at least once a year.

Despite already having three children under five, the wealthy pair are not planning to hire a nanny, the source added.

But like all parents of newborns, they are already exhausted.

"Angelina has been breast-feeding and that has been hard," said a source.

"But she also can't sleep because she is so excited. She could happily spend her whole time looking at Shiloh."

Yesterday the pair gave a press conference in Namibia to thank the awe-struck locals for being so hospitable.

"We have been able to have a very special, peaceful time for our family here, exploring your country and, more importantly, helping with the delivery of our daughter, Shiloh," Pitt told a news conference for local journalists at the Hansa hotel in the coastal town of Swakopmund. "So for that we are eternally grateful."

The pair added that they had no plans to marry, saying: "There is nothing in the air. The focus is the kids, and we are obviously extremely committed to the children and as parents together. So that kind of says it for us, and to have a ceremony on top of it is nothing."

Miss Aniston, meanwhile, is said to have told friends that she is pleased the baby has been born, and she had tried to get in touch with her ex to send her good wishes.

The former Friends actress, who is now dating actor Vince Vaughn, reportedly told friends: "I'm sick to death of being asked how I feel all the time. How do people think I feel?

"I've wanted this to be over for so long. Now, hopefully, my place in this sick triangle will be replaced with the baby. I'm finally going to be able to live again."
