Sonthi may ask for some US advice

(BangkokPost.com from Agencies) - Army chief Sonthi Boonyaratkalin rejected an American offer to help quell an insurgency in the restive South, saying that Thai forces can cope with the situation, according to AP news agency.

He said, however, that the country would appreciate it if the United States could provide assistance in the area of information as the US had experience in the Middle East and Afghanistan, especially in how to track foreign financial contributions to the insurgents.
Before it was corrected it was stated as US Intelligence, but it was corrected

Gen Sonthi said Thursday that Thailand appreciated the offer of military advice, but he regarded the situation as "an internal affair."

Gen Sonthi's response came a day after the US special-operations commander for the Pacific expressed concern about escalating violence in the region and offered to help counter unrest by training Thai forces if Thailand asked for it.

Maj Gen David Fridovich said in Honolulu that the US troops could teach Thai forces on how to use a "softer touch" to win over local populations and to isolate insurgents. However, he stressed that the US troops would not go to the region to fight themselves.
