318 persons killed in road accidents during Songkran

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) - The first six days of the Songkran festival, or Thai New Year, starting from April 11, saw a total of 3,823 road accidents nationwide in which 318 persons were killed and 4,393 injured.

The number of holiday travellers killed this year was 29 persons lower than the same period of 2006. Most accidents during the period involved motorcycles and resulted from drunken driving, speeding and recklessly changing lanes or suddenly cutting in front of other vehicles.

The government has set a week-long dangerous days and urged holiday-makers to be cautious while driving in a bid to lower the number of road casualties.

Many holiday-makers are expected to return to Bangkok Tuesday from upcountry with heavy traffic on highways and potential lawbreakers are anticipated.

Yes and one of Buddhism's precepts is, "Refrain from self-intoxication through alcohol or drugs". Just like the west is full of "Sunday Christians", Thailand is full of "Sunday Buddhists".

I guess it`s the same the world over amongst all the world`s religions. :sad:
