Gunman kills girl in Colorado school siege

A gunman took six girls hostage at a Colorado high school, holding authorities at bay for hours before shooting and fatally wounding one of the girls, then killing himself as SWAT team members moved in.

The gunman, in his mid-30s, claimed to have a bomb. He had originally grabbed six people but four were released soon after the siege began.

Police evacuated the school in the small town of Bailey, Colorado, 35 miles west of Denver, after receiving reports that several shots had been fired, a sheriff's spokesman said.

The wounded girl was rushed by helicopter to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver but died there, hospital spokesman Bev Lilly said.

Her classmate and fellow hostage was apparently not hurt in the incident.

Jefferson County authorities are all too familiar with school attacks.

The sheriff's office handled the 1999 incident at Columbine High, in which two students killed 13 people before taking their own lives, making it the deadliest school shooting in American history.

This is one sad incident. I dont know why some people act like this and kill innocent kids without any reason. Sad

This must have been a terifying ordeal for those children, seeing something they should never have to see.

Here`s a post about someone whose daughter was across the hall from the shooter and friends of the dead girl.

Terrible these violent shootings. Very stressful for anyone to have been thro this, esp. children. Our thoughts are with the children, parents and teachers at the school
