Newly appointed interior minister, deputy PM take oaths

BANGKOK, Oct 5 (TNA) – Thailand's Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, the coup leader and former army chief took their oaths to His Majesty the King on Friday before taking up their new posts as Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in charge of security affairs respectively.

Granted an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej at Chitrlada Palace for a swearing-in ceremony Friday afternoon, Gen. Surayud and Gen. Sonthi took their oaths before assuming their new posts on Monday.

Gen. Surayud is concurrently assuming the post of interior minister in place of Aree Wong-araya who earlier resigned under pressure.

The new interior minister will also oversee the general election, scheduled for December 23, to ensure a transparent and fair fashion nationwide.

The interior minister post was left vacant upon Mr. Aree's resignation, after he had been found to possess corporate stocks representing more than five per cent or beyond the limit legally allowed for cabinet members.

Gen. Sonthi was officially appointed Tuesday as deputy prime minister in the interim government.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej endorsed the appointment of General Sonthi, former army commander-in-chief, who led the military junta after last year's September 19 coup d'etat in a royal command.

Gen. Sonthi became a Cabinet member just two days after his mandatory retirement from the post of army chief and one day after his resignation from the post of Council for National Security chairman. As a deputy premier, Gen. Sonthi will take charge of security affairs.
