ICT website defaced by hacker

The Information and Communications Technology Ministry's website was defaced by a hacker who put a smiling picture of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on it.

The animated picture of Thaksin was imposed on black background, showing him smiling and waving.

The homepage also displayed "take back your dictatorship and return our Thailand" beside Thaksin's picture.

The picture displayed at about 11:50 am and lasted about ten minutes before the page was removed.

The site was out of service temporarily before it went online again at 2 pm.

Hackers insert Thaksin portrait in Thai govt website

BANGKOK, July 19 (TNA) - Thailand's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has traced and identified unnamed hackers who violated the ministry's website despite a new law just enforced to counter cyber crimes, according to the Ministry spokesman.

The hackers had inserted pictures of both ex-premier Thaksin and coup leader Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, chairman of the Council for National Security, on the main page of the ICT ministry's http://www.mict.go.th website.

The intruders also added criticisms of the military junta and the recently-drafted Constitution.

The cyber raids occurred one day after a new law was enforced to combat cyber crimes considered detrimental to national security, the monarchy, against medical ethics or pornographic.

Ministry spokesman Wissanu Meeyu said the authorities had traced three unidentified computer hackers but declined to tell if they were within the country or overseas.

However, the ministry planned to ask police Friday to take legal action against the hackers who might face a maximum five-year jail term or a maximum fine of Bt100,000, or both.

Mr. Wissanu admitted the ministry's website security was not state-of-the-art and is to be enhanced shortly.
