PM's spokesman airs uncertainty about Mr. Thaksin's continued role

BANGKOK, Sept 12 (TNA) - Whether or not caretaker prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will continue as head of government after the next general election remains uncertain, said Government Spokesman Dr. Surapong Suebwonglee.

The spokesman's comment followed a similar statement made earlier by Somchai Sunthornwat, caretaker Deputy Interior Minister and head of former Thai Rak Thai members of parliament.

Talks about the matter had been held informally among front-line executives of the party amid possibilities that the caretaker prime minister might leave the political arena for a period of time after
the next election.

Dr. Surapong said it remains to be seen if Mr. Thaksin will be retained as head of government in the foreseeable future.

Mr. Somchai earlier said Mr. Thaksin might be replaced as premier by a few outstanding persons among the rank and file of the party, specifically Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Pol. Gen, Chidchai Vanasatidya and Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai.

Dr. Surapong admitted Mr. Thaksin is yet to decide if he will retain premiership after the next general election in case that his party again scores victories in the polls.

TRT secretary-general Suriya Jungrungreangkit earlier commented that the person to be named prime minister is required to top the party list of MPs in the next election.
