Wayne Rooney scored his first goal of the season to earn Manchester United a 1-0 victory over Roma the Champions League at Old Trafford.

The result leaves United three points clear at the top of Group F, having won their opening two matches.

England striker Rooney struck with 20 minutes left on the clock when he latched on to a neat pass from Nani and hit a low first-time shot into the net from 15 yards.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said after the match that he was pleased with his team's performance, even though the game was a much tighter affair than last April's quarter-final clash in which United hammered Roma 7-1.

Another win yesterday saw United go on top. They beat Wigan by 4 goals to nil. Goals by Tevez, Ronaldo (2), and Rooney all came in the 2nd half.

After United took Dynamo Kiev apart in a comprehensive win the Reds are now definitely through to the next round of the Champions League.

The 20-year-old Spaniard got the benefit of a ricochet off the back of Carlos Tevez's head but by then United were already in control.

Tevez and Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo scored the others to wrap up the win.

Rooney`s injury puts him out of United`s matches for the next month, and the game against Croatia. Hopefully Saha`s return to fitness will see United through this period though.
