Assets committee unworried by Thaksin's wife's lawsuit

BANGKOK, Aug 5 (TNA) - Thailand's Assets Examination Committee (AEC) is not concerned over a civil lawsuit filed last Friday by ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's wife, Pojaman, according to a member of the committee.

Jaruwan Maintaka, also Auditor General, said Khunying Pojaman's Bt50 billion civil lawsuit would not pose a problem for the AEC. On the contrary, according to Khunying Jaruwan, it is fair and appropriate to have a neutral party such as a judicial court to oversee the issue.

Pojaman's lawyer claimed that the AEC froze her family's assets unlawfully, citing her family had acquired their multi-billion baht assets long before Mr. Thaksin assumed the premiership.

The AEC has allowed anybody whose assets have been frozen to file suits, but not many have exercised that right, said the AEC member.

Touching on Pojaman's charges that the AEC was discriminating against her and her relatives by freezing her family's assets, Jaruwan said the AEC was certainly fair as it had looked into complaints and evidence before issuing an order.

Friday's civil lawsuit against the AEC is the second of its kind, following one filed earlier seeking an equal amount of damage compensation from the panel which had also frozen Mr. Thaksin's assets.

Asked whether the AEC would freeze additional assets of the deposed prime minister's family, Jaruwan said she had to check with the Office of the Auditor General first and the result should be known this week.
