PM to visit farmers in Northeast next week
BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) -- Senior officials led by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont will travel to Ubon Ratchathani in the northeast on Monday and meet with farmers to discuss their problems.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Thira Sutabutr said Saturday that the prime minister would hold talks with local farmers on their problems concerning production.
When asked whether the upcoming trip to Ubon Ratchathani province was aimed at preventing people there to travel to Bangkok for protests against the government and the Council for National Security (CNS), Mr. Thira said the trip was meant to help the government learn better about the problems of the people so that more meaningful assistance could be given.
Rumours about recruiting rural residents to demonstrate against the CNS and the government have been circulating for several weeks. Some believe that protests have been 'on hold' until after Songkran, the Thai traditional New Year, which ended earlier this week.
