Thai PM committed to peaceful Sunday anti-coup rally

BANGKOK, Dec 7 (TNA) - Thailand's Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont is not unnerved by the planned anti-coup rally on Sunday, but has appealed to its participants to conduct a peaceful gathering,  Government Spokesman Yonyuth Mayalarp said on Thursday.

Following the government's initiation of the partial lifting of martial law in Bangkok and another 40 provinces late last month, members of various groups including academics and activists have planned to gather at Sanam Luang in Central Bangkok on December 10 to air their opposition against the September 19 coup-makers Council for National Security and the interim government it installed.

Technically, martial law has not been lifted, pending royal endorsement, but it is understood that both the CNS and the interim government are commited to the peaceful realisation of full democracy and have no desire for violence.

In the past two months since the prime minister took office, there have been no violent incidents in connection with the movement against CNS and the government.

The prime minister is accordingly unworried about the planned rally on Sunday, Mr Yongyuth said.

According to the spokesman, the prime minister said the public have the right to stage their movement in line with the democratic regime but he appealed to the rally's organisers and demonstrators to exercise their rights under the rules of law and order.

"The government believes the planned rally won't cause any trouble because most Thai people as well as those who come forward to voice their political opinions--have good intentions towards the nation," the spokesman said.

Mr Yongyuth noted that CNS and the government share a common view regarding how to deal with the anti-coup movements. Instead of rigid and decisive measures against demonstrators, the peaceful approach of talking and building understanding with protesters will be used, he said.

The government has not ordered special security measures during the rally since it is the CNS's responsibility, he said.
